An Art Admirer’s Journey: Finding Beauty in Creativity and Connection by Bryan Lilly

My name is Bryan Lilly. I am 25 years old, and I am from Eagle River, Alaska, and I am currently still living here. I am majoring in Applied Management. I am enlisted in the Alaska Air National, working full time with them, and I love my job. I am happily married and a father of an 18-month-old toddler. Some of my hobbies include snowboarding, fishing, and taking walks with my family.

I am not close to art, but I am willing to be impacted by it. I am not a professional artist (not to say a painter, sculptor, or the like), but I enjoy the creative process of creating art. Seeing my son color, having his ideas become a reality on paper, and putting his art on our fridge as a tiny but precious museum of his work is my most excellent reward.

I do not have much of an art collecting or making habit, but I have some favorite pieces around my house, like our wedding paintings and gorgeously done portraits of beloved family pets. These paintings are sentimental, daily reminders of love, memories, and closeness with those we love.

I have not attended a First Friday event in my city, but I would love to try and see what the local artists offer. I would want to find pieces that are indeed me that add more character to my home.

Outside my house, I have visited the Anchorage Museum a couple of times and loved going through all the art. This dynamic collection in the museum has something for everyone, and I love that it cultivates kids' love of art and learning. My son likes the museum just as much as I do, partly because it has many activities that bring children's minds into a fun learning direction. Moreover, from these experiences, I still keep developing an art love, though I am more of a lover than a maker.

  1. Gotta love Bob Ross and his happy little trees. The Anchorage Museum is awesome. I used to go to a monthly meeting there and worked with the director of the Children's section. That was back in the 90s.

  2. Hi Bryan! I feel like I know you well with your blog posting. I love Bob Ross and am glad you put him on your blog. My youngest kid is 16, so I don't get the awesome little toddler drawings anymore to put on my fridge. I do miss those days, but I still have some of their drawings saved. Good luck learning more about art, I know I will enjoy this class.
